First Animal Welfare Centre in Puerto Morelos Set to Transform Community
Construction of the first animal welfare center in Puerto Morelos is underway, marking a significant step towards improving the lives of pets and promoting public health.
What's Changing
Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz recently laid the first stone for the 6 million peso center, which will offer essential services like veterinary care, sterilization, and vaccination. The project, planned in two phases, will be completed in 2027.
What It Means for Residents
The new center will provide a safe and functional space for animals in need, promoting responsible pet ownership and preventing zoonotic diseases. It highlights the town's commitment to public health, community care, and environmental sustainability.
Infrastructure and Services
The first phase, set to be completed in 2026, will include 277 square meters of modern infrastructure. The center will have offices, an operating room, spaces for sterilization and vaccination, and an outdoor area for pets' recreation and preparation for adoption.
Quit my marketing job in Miami, sold most of what I owned, and drove to Mexico with two cats and a vague plan. Puerto Morelos wasn't on my radar until I got here. Now I can't imagine leaving. Writing about expat life, local food, and the freedom of starting over.
