380 Evacuated in Puerto Morelos Sismo Drill: What It Means for You
It was a clear, sunny day when the alarm blared, and the Hotel Sensira Resort & Spa in Puerto Morelos suddenly transformed into an evacuation center. This wasn’t just a drill for the staff; 380 people, including 239 tourists, 139 workers, and three suppliers, were quickly and efficiently moved to safety. The exercise, which simulated a 7.0 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter near Cabo Catoche, lasted about 25 minutes and tested everything from evacuation procedures to medical response.

During the drill, a simulated crisis was also played out, where a guest experienced a nervous breakdown with signs of hyperventilation and loss of consciousness. The hotel’s internal rescue teams and local emergency services worked together to ensure everyone was accounted for and treated appropriately. This drill highlighted the ongoing commitment to preparedness in the region.
For residents and visitors alike, the exercise serves as a stark reminder of the importance of knowing what to do in a disaster. While we hope such events never occur, being prepared can make all the difference. Stay informed and practice emergency drills to keep yourself and your loved ones safe.
Quit my marketing job in Miami, sold most of what I owned, and drove to Mexico with two cats and a vague plan. Puerto Morelos wasn't on my radar until I got here. Now I can't imagine leaving. Writing about expat life, local food, and the freedom of starting over.
