I'm traveling to Cancun in January 2027 and I've been reading about the VISITAX, the tourist tax that foreign visitors are supposedly required to pay when visiting Quintana Roo.

Implementing a tax in this manner is counterintuitive. It's essentially a voluntary contribution, which can be seen as a donation. A more logical approach would be to incorporate it into airline, train, or hotel fees, or simply eliminate it. The current system at the airport contributes to the perception that everything in Mexico is designed to extract money from tourists, making it less likely for visitors to return and potentially impacting local businesses.

Upon returning, I observed a booth located near the check-in area at the airport. Although no one seemed to be checking for payment or paying the tax, a booth was present, which may have been intended to collect the state tax.
