Driving in Playa del Carmen: stress level and safety concerns?

Considering renting a car to explore the Yucatán and Quintana Roo area, but I'm worried about the stress of driving in Mexico, specifically the road conditions, traffic, and potential interactions with police.

Driving in the area is not stressful at all. I've rented cars for months and driven to Bacalar, Merida, and other places without issues. The highway is solid for much of the route.

Considering the stress of driving, it's actually easier to get around by ADO or Collectivo bus. It's not expensive and less stressful. You can get a Collectivo to Chichen Itza too.

I opted not to rent a car and instead used ADO buses to get around the peninsula. This turned out to be a convenient and stress-free way to travel, and I appreciated not having to worry about navigating unfamiliar roads.

As a solo female traveler, I felt safe on ADO buses and in the bus stations. The buses are comfortable, with internet, AC, and power at your seat.

I couldn't find a direct ADO bus from Valladolid to Cancun Airport, which was a major reason for considering a rental car.

We drove from Cancun airport to Valladolid, Chichen Itza, and Tulum in a rented jeep without encountering any problems. However, we did need to be mindful of speed bumps in the villages we passed through.
