The Little Red Lighthouse Gets a Makeover in New York
New York's iconic Little Red Lighthouse is set for a significant renovation, aiming to preserve its historic charm while enhancing accessibility and the surrounding park. This project, spearheaded by the Historic House Trust, marks a once-in-a-generation effort to restore the lighthouse's cast-iron structure and improve the visitor experience.

The Little Red Lighthouse, originally built in 1880 in New Jersey and relocated to Fort Washington Park in 1921, has been a symbol of New York's resilience and imagination for over a century. Its story, immortalized in the 1942 children's book 'The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge,' continues to inspire generations.
Preservation architecture firm Henson Architecture will lead the restoration, which will include restoring the lighthouse's historic fabric, making it more accessible, upgrading safety features, and enhancing the surrounding park. The initial investment of $13 million will move the design process forward, but no specific timeline or total cost has been announced yet.
Despite its historical significance, the lighthouse currently has limited public access. Visitors can only tour it during specific events, such as the annual Little Red Lighthouse Festival, which takes place on October 3, 2026. This festival, featuring readings of the children's book, live music, and other activities, offers a unique opportunity to experience the lighthouse and its storied history.
