MTA Expands Fare Gates: A Step Toward Tackling Subway Evasion
New York City's Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) plans to install new fare gates at 20 additional subway stations after a successful pilot program led to a 35% drop in fare evasion. These modernized gates, designed to be more difficult to bypass, will be installed by the end of 2026, marking the first comprehensive overhaul of the fare array system in over three decades.

The MTA has invited design firms Cubic, STraffic, and Conduent to submit bids for the next batch of gates. These gates feature sensors, long double doors, and machine-learning technology to prevent unpaid entries. Since the pilot began, the new gates have recorded roughly 29 million entries and 34 million exits, with an estimated 40 to 50% of typical daily subway riders having used them at least once.
With the new installations, the MTA hopes to further reduce fare evasion, making the subway system more equitable for all commuters. For expats and digital nomads, this means a smoother ride, fewer disruptions, and an overall better experience on the subway. Keep an eye out for these new gates as you navigate the city.
