Citi Bike Expands Across Seven NYC Neighborhoods: A Boost for Sustainable Transport
It’s official: Citi Bike has completed a major expansion, bringing 230 new stations to seven neighborhoods in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the city’s Department of Transportation announced the addition of 3,700 new docks, covering an impressive 86.5 square miles and putting 62 percent of New Yorkers within reach of the bike-share program.

The expansion follows a successful launch in Bay Ridge last September, where riders have taken over 75,000 trips. With the new stations, more residents can now easily access areas like Norwood, Riverdale, and Brownsville. The city aims to make it easier for people to get to work, school, and enjoy the city’s many attractions.
The good news doesn't stop there. Lyft, which operates Citi Bike, plans to add hundreds of new docks in high-ridership areas such as Greenpoint, Williamsburg, and Park Slope. These areas will see an influx of new stations, making biking more accessible than ever before.
However, the expansion comes with a price. Citi Bike has increased the cost of e-bike and classic bike overages and annual memberships. E-bike and classic bike overage fees are now 27 cents per minute for members, and annual memberships have gone up by $20 to $239 per year. For expats and digital nomads, this could mean higher expenses, but the convenience and health benefits of biking around the city are undeniable.
