Central Park is about to get a major upgrade with the groundbreaking of a $35.7 million stormwater system. The project, dubbed the North End Recirculation Project, aims to reduce flooding in Harlem by improving water management in the northern part of the park. This is a big deal for anyone living or working in the area, as it promises to alleviate flooding and improve water quality.

Central Park’s New Stormwater System Set to Transform Harlem’s Water Management

Starting this week, work is underway to connect the Harlem Meer, the Loch, and the Pool, creating a recirculating and filtering system. During dry weather, water will be diverted from the Meer and pumped to a point south of the Pool before flowing back by gravity. In heavy storms, the water level of the Meer will be lowered to create more capacity for rainwater, which will then refill the water bodies. Once conditions return to normal, the system will resume its regular cycle.

The project will also involve significant infrastructure changes, including the construction of filtration and pumping systems in vaults, modifications to the Meer’s outflow control structure, and the removal of sediment. These changes are expected to improve water quality and reduce harmful algal blooms, which are a problem during warmer months. The system will manage stormwater across a 204-acre park watershed, reducing stormwater flows into city sewers by 90 percent and conserving the city’s drinking water supply.

For expats and digital nomads based in New York, this means less flooding and a cleaner, healthier park. If you live or work in Harlem, keep an eye out for construction in the coming years. While it’s a big investment, it’s a step towards a more sustainable future for Central Park and the surrounding neighborhoods.
