Is it worth staying in both Costa Mujeres and Isla Mujeres?

I'm a frequent traveler to Cancún for work and to see family, and I'm planning a relaxing break with my partner in December. We're looking for a mix of convenience and local exploration, and we're considering splitting our 10-day trip between Costa Mujeres and Isla Mujeres. We'd like to stay in a hotel in Costa Mujeres for 6 nights and then move to an Airbnb on Isla Mujeres for 3 nights, but we're not sure if it's worth visiting both places given their similarity and proximity to each other.

I recommend Riu Latino in Costa Mujeres for an adults-only retreat. This top resort is close to Isla Mujeres, which can help protect your hotel beach from seaweed. However, I was underwhelmed by Isla Mujeres, finding it overly commercialized and packed with hotels, shops, and markets. In contrast, Isla Saona in the Dominican Republic is a more serene destination. I only needed a day trip to Isla Mujeres to feel overwhelmed. Mexico is a great place to visit, but Isla Mujeres might not be the best fit for everyone.

I can understand why you might feel overwhelmed by Isla Mujeres. While it's a beautiful place, the businesses seem to cater heavily to tourists. We visited in April and found the shopping to be a bit overwhelming, with many shops selling the same items and aggressive salespeople. One vendor even tried to sell us weed after I told him we were from Canada. If you're looking for a convenient location, the hotel zone is a great option, and the Royalton CHIC is a great place to stay.

If you want to explore beyond your hotel, Costa Mujeres might not be the best option. Everything is quite far apart, and taking a taxi or Uber can be expensive. Staying in the hotel zone would be a better choice, as you can take a bus to downtown and discover local restaurants. It's a more convenient and affordable option.
