Officials in Quintana Roo have unveiled their strategy to combat the influx of sargassum during the upcoming holiday season. The Quinta Región Naval, a division of the Mexican Navy, has prepared their personnel and resources to ensure the cleanliness of the region’s beaches, particularly those in Isla Mujeres, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, and Puerto Morelos. The group has announced that they will be maintaining daily clean-up of 11 beaches, covering an area in the Benito Juárez, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Othón P. Blanco, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, and Tulum municipalities.

According to the announcement, the Marina de México will be collaborating with various government agencies and institutions to combat the sargassum menace. The Quinta Región Naval has already been responsible for the removal of over 156,000 tons of sargassum, accounting for 45% of the total removal, in 2026. This effort is crucial to protecting the natural beauty and economic activities of the Caribbean coast of Mexico, especially in communities that rely on tourism.

The Marina's strategies include detection, containment, and removal of sargassum both onshore and offshore. They have also joined forces with other government departments and private stakeholders to ensure the protection of the region’s natural assets and the sustainability of the local economy.

Residents and tourists in the region are encouraged to stay informed about the ongoing efforts and to continue their support for these environmental initiatives. The upcoming clean-up efforts are expected to continue throughout the holiday season and will include more beaches as the tourist season progresses.
