Saving Our Life Support: The Restoration of Mangroves in Cancún
As someone who has only been living in Cancún for a few months, I've noticed how much the mangrove forests have protected us from natural disasters. But it's only recently that I've learned the full extent of their importance. With over 180 tons of single-use plastic documented in the mangroves of Yalahau and Nichupté, it's clear that without them, our future is at risk.

I had the opportunity to visit the Institute of Forensic Medicine and take a tour of their educational offerings. It's amazing to see how much they're doing to restore mangroves and educate the public about their importance.
Quintana Roo is experiencing a silent renaissance, with collectives of young biologists, fishermen, and conservationists restoring mangroves in Laguna Nichupté and Isla Holbox. They're removing plastics and replanting propagules, showing us that every root of a mangrove is a barrier we've built to protect ourselves.
It's time we recognize the mangrove as more than just a piece of land. It's our life support system, and we must do everything in our power to protect it. The Institute of Forensic Medicine is doing an incredible job with their educational programs, and I encourage anyone interested in learning more to visit their facilities or reach out to them for more information.
