MOBI Ruta 17 Iniciará en Cancún el 19 de Octubre: Beneficios y Nuevos Transportes para Residentes
By Mike D

It's worth noting that Ruta 17 MOBI is set to kick off in Cancún on October 19th, offering a new mobility option for residents and digital nomads like myself who have been living in the Hotel Zone for the past year. Mara Lezama Espinosa, the Governor of Quintana Roo, announced the start of this initiative, which is the first urban route of the Quintana Roo Mobility for Wellbeing (MOBI).
MOBI, a system designed to improve public transportation in the state, will connect 99 neighborhoods, benefiting 242,821 people. This route will connect residential areas with schools, shops, services, and other important spots in the city. The first week of operation will be free, but after October 27th, there will be a fee-based system with discounted fares for subsequent trips.
MOBI will use 247 service points, including 101 locations for purchasing and reloading general fare cards and 146 for reload-only services. Conveniently, these points include popular stores like OXXO, Dunosusa, 7-Eleven, and GoMart. Residents can easily purchase and reload their cards here, making the transition to this new system smoother.
This route will start from Isla Hawái, near Arco Norte Avenue, and will reach Plaza Las Américas, where it will return. Its coverage includes 85,796 homes, 148 schools, and 8,634 affordable units. The route will also serve the Campus Cancún of the Universidad de Quintana Roo, COBACH Plantel 4, Lak’in 259 Market, Multiplaza Kabah, and ADO Terminal.
As a retiree and avid beach-goer in Cancún, this MOBI initiative is particularly exciting for me. Not only does it offer a more efficient way to get around the city, but it also provides a cost-effective solution for commuting between residential areas and commercial hubs. With fewer transfers and lower fares, this can significantly reduce travel expenses and time for expats and digital nomads like myself.
But let’s not forget that while the MOBI system is being rolled out, the city’s public transportation landscape remains a work in progress. The MOBI system is part of a larger effort to improve mobility and ensure that all residents and visitors can access the services they need. While it’s a step forward, there is still room for improvement as the system expands and becomes more integrated with the existing infrastructure.
In summary, the MOBI Ruta 17 initiative is a crucial development for Cancún’s residents and visitors alike. It represents a significant leap forward in ensuring that the city remains accessible and user-friendly for everyone, especially those who may not have access to personal vehicles. Whether you’re a retiree like me or a digital nomad, this new transportation option promises to make your life in Cancún more convenient and enjoyable.
