Dune Restoration Gains Momentum in Quintana Roo Hotels
As I navigate life in Cancún, I've noticed a growing effort to restore dunes along the coast, especially in Quintana Roo. According to Vicente Ferreyra Acosta, director of Sustentur, 22 hotels have already joined the dune restoration program, with the goal of reaching 30 hotels by the end of the year. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to protect beaches from erosion and the invasive sargasso weed.

While the initial phase of the project involved just a handful of hotels, it's now gaining traction, with support from the German development agency GIZ. The participating hotels cover approximately 18 to 20 kilometers of coastline, and early results show that around 10 to 12 square kilometers of dune have been recovered. However, measuring beach recovery is more complex, as the impact of dune loss varies significantly across different areas.
In Cancún, the most affected areas are in the hotel zone, where development has pushed close to the shoreline. In contrast, destinations like Playa del Carmen and Costa Mujeres have maintained well-preserved dunes. Ferreyra Acosta highlights Costa Mujeres as a positive example, showing how maintaining dunes can be achieved across most hotels.
For expats and digital nomads like me, this project is crucial. It not only improves the aesthetic appeal of our surroundings but also helps to ensure the sustainability of our favorite beaches. If you're planning a visit or staying in the area, keep an eye out for the ongoing restoration efforts and consider supporting these eco-friendly initiatives.
