As the month of September arrives, Chetumal, a city in Quintana Roo, Mexico, celebrates its independence with a mix of traditional festivities and family gatherings. For many expats and digital nomads like myself, living in or near Cancún, this month holds a special place in the heart.

Chetumal Embraces the Patriotic Month Amidst Tradition and Family

While some choose to commemorate the day with a traditional ‘Grito de Independencia’ and a festive meal, others prefer to simply reflect on the country's freedom without adding to the family budget. Regardless of the approach, the shared goal is to honor those who fought for the nation.

On the 15th and 16th of September, families gather in the plaza to participate in the ‘Grito’ and children take part in the civic-military parade. It’s a time for unity and remembrance, a moment when we can put aside our busy lives and come together as a family.
