New Arena on the Horizon: Calgary Flames Say Goodbye to the Saddledome
Raising a family in Calgary since 2020, I’ve seen the city grow and evolve. Now, the Calgary Flames are leading the charge, with their move to a new arena on the horizon. The team will leave the Saddledome, where they’ve played for 43 years, and embark on a new era at Scotia Place next year.

The transition comes with mixed emotions. Robert Hayes, the president of Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation (CSEC), acknowledges the significance: 'It's emotional for people, but moving into a really cool new place is exciting too.' The new arena, slated to open in 2027, will feature a 18,400-seat hockey arena that can expand to 20,000 for concerts, plus a 1,000-seat community arena and various community spaces.
While the Flames’ presence will continue to drive the new arena, there's a broader vision. Hayes envisions a facility that can host diverse events, from figure skating to indoor soccer, catering to the city's growing diversity. 'We need to tap into those different pockets that aren’t necessarily sports-related,' he says, emphasizing the potential for non-sports activities.
The move to Scotia Place isn't just about hockey. The new arena is expected to have at-grade entrances, improving accessibility. CSEC, as the prime tenant, will operate the facility, generating revenue for the city and the Flames.
For expats and digital nomads like me, this transition represents a significant change. The Saddledome has been a cornerstone of the community, but the new arena offers a modern, versatile space. It’s a trade-off: cheaper tickets but a further location, quieter atmosphere but slower pace. As Calgary continues to evolve, embracing new opportunities, it’s exciting to see what the future holds.
