Calgary Public Library Plans Major Expansion with 8 New Locations by 2040
ExpatsList welcomes you to Calgary, where the local library system is undergoing a significant transformation. The Calgary Public Library (CPL) recently unveiled plans for eight new library locations and three redeveloped sites by 2040, aiming to boost the city's public space offerings and enhance community engagement.

According to Sarah Meilleur, the CEO of CPL, the expansion is part of a broader vision to make Calgary a more inclusive and intellectually stimulating city. The new facilities will cover at least 200,000 square feet of space, bringing the library system to 30 locations from the current 22. This ambitious goal aligns with a North American benchmark of 0.3 square feet of community space per capita.
The expansion is not just about physical space but also about membership growth. CPL aims to increase active library memberships to three out of every four Calgarians by 2040, up from about half today. This initiative includes increasing annual visits to nearly 18 million by 2040, up from seven million in 2025, and boosting total circulation to nearly 30 million items annually, compared with 17.5 million in 2025.
As a digital nomad or expat based in Calgary, this expansion could offer more convenient access to resources and community spaces. Whether you're working remotely or just looking for a place to read, the new libraries will likely provide better amenities and services. Keep an eye on the progress of these projects, as they could significantly enhance your quality of life in the city.
