Exploring Mason Elephant Park: A Day Among Giants

Ubud is a place of natural beauty and cultural richness, and one of the most humbling experiences I've had here is walking among the giants at Mason Elephant Park. Set in the lush landscapes of Taro village, just north of Ubud, Mason Elephant Park is a sanctuary for 24 rescued Sumatran elephants, providing them with lifelong care and offering visitors a unique and responsible way to engage with these majestic creatures.

Upon entering the park, the first stop is the Elephant Museum and Education Centre, where a replica of a mammoth skeleton gives a fascinating glimpse into the ancient history of the elephant family. The park’s approach has evolved over the years, focusing on natural interactions and guest experiences that prioritize the well-being of the elephants. This philosophy is evident in its various programmes, each offering a different way to connect with the elephants.

One of the highlights is the Picnic with an Elephant, where you can sit among the greenery and enjoy a fruit-filled picnic with a friendly elephant like Bores. It's a relaxed and unhurried experience, allowing you to observe the elephants in their natural habitat without the pressure of an active encounter.

The Elephant Wellness Walk, guided by a Mahout, offers a more active and intimate way to connect with the elephants. For this experience, we met Tagor, a gentle and charismatic elephant who has become a beloved resident of the park. Walking with Tagor, I could see the individual personalities and relationships that define each elephant’s life at the park.

The Elephant Wash & Bathe programme is a different kind of encounter, involving guests in the elephants' daily routines. At the Elephant Lake, you can participate in the ritual of washing and caring for the elephants, learning about their needs and care in the process.
