Direct Flights to Tulum: A New Route on the Horizon
Have you ever wished to skip the layovers and fly directly to the stunning beaches of Tulum from Chile? Well, it seems that the dream might just come true. During a recent meeting with Chile’s ambassador to Mexico, Tulum’s tourism director, Haydee Hernández Pastrana, proposed the possibility of a direct flight route from Viña del Mar to Tulum. While no airline has stepped forward to operate this service yet, the idea has been floated, and Tulum is eyeing a promotional deal with Viña del Mar.

The timing of this proposal is particularly interesting as Tulum’s airport currently lacks direct connections to South America. The winter schedule, which begins in October, only features destinations in North America, such as Calgary, Montreal, and Dallas. This means that a direct connection from Chile could significantly boost the number of visitors from a different region.
Interestingly, the ambassador, Francisco Javier Chahuán Chahuán, was born in Viña del Mar, which adds a personal touch to the potential partnership. While no date for the flight has been set, the municipality is hopeful that the route could be established in the near or medium term.
For Tulum residents and expats like myself, who have settled here and embraced the laid-back, beachside lifestyle, a direct flight could make visiting family and friends in Chile much easier. It’s a small world, indeed, and it just got a little bit smaller.
