As a longtime expat in Tamarindo, Costa Rica, I'm excited to share some good news for those involved in agriculture here. The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) has launched a program aimed at supporting small farmers in Tamarindo and beyond, particularly those growing potatoes, onions, and carrots.
The 'Promotion of Precision Agriculture Subprogram' offers access to advanced agricultural technology and technical assistance. Farmers with plots between 0.5 and 1 hectare can apply for non-reimbursable funds, equipment, and training. This initiative, in collaboration with the Development Bank System (SBD) and CATIE, aims to enhance efficiency, sustainability, and resilience to climate change in local agriculture.
Interested farmers must be registered as PYMPA, produce one of the specified crops, and be up-to-date with tax and social security obligations. They also need a permanent water source and a three-year land agreement. Participants will receive training in good agricultural practices, water management, and other relevant topics.
With winter just around the corner, this program comes at a crucial time for local farmers, and I encourage anyone interested to sign up by November 30, 2026. For more information, visit the Agencia de Extensión Agropecuaria in Llano Grande, Cartago, or Zarcero, Alajuela.
