Dog Meat Ban in Siem Reap: An Urgent Call for Enforcement
For years, Siem Reap has been a hub for expats and digital nomads seeking a blend of ancient history and modern adventure. However, the city's reputation is about to receive a significant test, as a local NGO is urging stricter enforcement of the dog meat ban in the area.

The Cambodian Animal Welfare Society (CAWS) has been advocating for the protection of dogs in Siem Reap for over a decade. While the ban has been in place since 2015, the NGO claims that enforcement has been inconsistent, allowing the practice to continue in some areas. This inconsistency is particularly concerning given the high volume of international visitors, many of whom may be unaware of the local laws and customs.
According to Sopheak C, a licensed Angkor guide for eleven years, the impact of the dog meat trade extends beyond ethical considerations. 'The gates of the Angkor temples are open early, and the crowds can be overwhelming,' he says. 'But if we want to protect the animals, we must ensure that the ban is strictly enforced, especially during peak tourist seasons.'
CAWS recommends that visitors and residents alike support the local authorities in their efforts to enforce the ban. 'If you see any illegal activities, please report them to the relevant authorities,' Sopheak adds. 'Together, we can make a difference.'
