New Public Toilets Set to Transform La Laguna’s Historic Centre
La Laguna's city council has taken a significant step towards improving public amenities in the historic centre by installing new self-cleaning public toilets. These facilities, strategically placed between San Antonio street and Doctor Olivera square, and near Christ and Adelantado squares, aim to provide accessibility and convenience for all visitors.

Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez explained that the initiative began in 2024 after community requests were gathered. The project team has worked closely with urban planning representatives to ensure compliance with historic area regulations. Gutiérrez highlighted that the toilets will cater to users with disabilities and will have specific adaptations for ostomised individuals, with the support of the Ostomised Association of the Canary Islands (AOCAN).
Angel Chinea, the council's works councillor, confirmed that the structures are currently being connected to water and electricity supplies, along with other necessary installations. The cost to use the facilities will be a nominal fee of one euro, intended to cover maintenance and cleaning supplies. Chinea stated that this project represents a significant milestone, as it will provide the central area with self-cleaning public toilets year-round for the first time.
With the initial feedback in the coming months, additional locations for similar facilities will be considered.
