Puerto Vallarta's Beach Cleanup Yields 21.8 Tons of Waste, Eight Beaches Strive for Blue Flag Certification
The sun's warm light bathes the Zona Romantica as I bake bread in my small bakery on Basilio Badillo. Outside, the morning air carries the sweet smell of fresh market fruits and vegetables. Today, the city’s beach-cleanup efforts have reached impressive heights, with volunteers collectively removing over 21.8 tons of waste from our beloved shores.

Eight beaches, including Playa de Oro, Camarones, and Holi, are now pursuing Blue Flag certification. This means better water quality, safer conditions, and enhanced environmental management, which directly impacts us residents and visitors who flock to these shores for a day’s swim or a weekend getaway. The push is practical; cleaner beaches mean healthier environments for sea turtles and clearer water for swimmers and snorkelers.
Councilman Christian Omar Bravo Carbajal, who leads the effort, echoes my sentiments: 'Caring for our beaches is a task for everyone.' It’s a reminder that every effort, no matter how small, contributes to the overall goal of a cleaner, more thriving Puerto Vallarta.
