Fruit fly infestation worse than ever this year?

I'm used to having 20-30 fruit flies around this time of year, but in the span of a few days we have hundreds, and they won't go anywhere near my apple cider vinegar traps that always work. They hang out on the ceiling until the sun comes up, then they come down. They seem a bit bigger and darker in colour than the usual little reddish ones.

I've been cleaning my home repeatedly, but the fruit flies keep coming back. I managed to reduce their numbers temporarily, but it seems they had a resurgence during the slightly warmer fall. I've noticed they tend to congregate around the windows.

We had almost no fruit flies until September, but since then, they've been a nuisance. I'm not sure if the extra rainfall is to blame, but it's possible they're entering from outside. Interestingly, when we do have compost, we don't see the usual swarm of fruit flies that we typically do. They seem to be present throughout the house, not just in the kitchen.

Fruit flies appear to be unpredictable in their behavior. My kitchen isn't spotless, with a garbage can, green bin, dog, and multiple cans waiting for recycling, but I don't seem to be attracting a large number of fruit flies. Perhaps it's because we don't leave overripe fruit or vegetables out.

We had very few fruit flies last year, but this year, we've had a noticeable presence. Our kitchen isn't immaculate, but it's not as bad as some people's experiences. I'm not sure what's causing the difference.

My kitchen has been somewhat neglected due to wedding planning and other commitments. As a result, we haven't seen many fruit flies. In contrast, my lunchroom at work is a fruit fly hotspot, with even the hand soap dispenser being infested. Our custodian does a good job of keeping the area clean, but it's still a challenge.
