Panama Canal Authority Declines to Administer Balboa and Cristóbal Ports
As a parent with two kids living in Panama City for over a decade, I can say with certainty that the administration of the ports of Balboa and Cristóbal by the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) is not on the horizon. This decision, made clear by Minister for Canal Affairs José Ramón Icaza, has significant implications for the day-to-day life of expats and digital nomads here.
Icaza stated that the proposal for the ACP to take over the ports has not yet reached the ACP board of directors and is currently only in the prequalification stage for other projects. This means that for now, the ports will continue to operate under their current temporary administrations, which include APM Terminals Panama at Balboa and TIL Panama at Cristóbal.
The news is a relief for those of us who have been concerned about the stability and continuity of operations at these vital ports. However, it also raises questions about the long-term plans for the ports and how they will fit into the broader vision of the Panama Canal Authority.
For expats and digital nomads, this decision means that the current temporary arrangements will remain in place for the foreseeable future. While this stability is appreciated, it also highlights the ongoing need for clarity and transparency regarding the future of the port concessions.
As we navigate the ever-changing landscape of living and working in Panama City, such announcements are crucial for planning and decision-making. The ACP’s focus on the prequalification process for the new Corozal and Telfers Island ports provides a glimmer of hope for future developments, but the current state of the Balboa and Cristóbal ports remains a key concern for many of us.
