Pharmacies with ADHD meds in NYC?

Pharmacies with ADHD meds in NYC?
健康・ウェルネス 6 answers • igor
I'm having trouble getting my ADHD meds refilled in Manhattan. I've called over 20 pharmacies and none of them seem to have the meds in stock or know when they'll be restocked. I've been on these meds since I was 14 and I'm starting to make mistakes at work because I'm rationing them. I live in Manhattan and have insurance with Kaiser in CA, but the bigger chain pharmacies haven't given me any pushback on the script, just the supply.

You're competing with a large number of college students and finance professionals in the same city who view these medications as study aids. This has been a challenge since before the pandemic. Interestingly, there's a national shortage of the precursor used to manufacture these medications, which is mostly imported from India. The country is operating at full capacity, and domestic production is non-existent. You might have slightly better luck with a mail-order pharmacy.

Pharmacies often don't provide accurate information over the phone to non-established customers with active prescriptions. However, some pharmacies in less residential neighborhoods, non-chain locations, or hospitals may be more willing to help. If you have insurance that covers mail-order prescriptions, this can be a good option. Otherwise, you may need to try multiple pharmacies to find one that has the medication in stock.

Even mail-order pharmacies can be unreliable these days. I relied on them for the first five years of the shortage, but they've become less consistent in recent times.

I recently switched to a local small town pharmacy and learned that each manufacturer is allotted a certain amount of the medication for the year. If they run out before the end of the year, they must request approval to produce more. This often results in a shortage of the medication, particularly in the last few months of the year. When pharmacies do have the medication, it's often a generic brand that may not provide the exact same effect as the original medication.

I recommend using a mail-in pharmacy, which has been convenient for me and always has the medication in stock. Alternatively, you can try finding a local pharmacy and becoming a regular customer. This can increase your chances of getting the medication when you need it, as the pharmacist will be more likely to have it in stock for you.

I'm still trying to find healthcare here. I'm prioritizing insurance plans that make it easy to refill my medications. Could you share which insurance you use?
