When considering a master's program in art, it's essential to find a good fit based on your advisor. NYU is a reputable institution, but its focus on European art might not be ideal for those interested in Latin American art. This could limit the program's usefulness for certain students.

Art history graduate programs often prioritize students who plan to work in non-profit sectors, such as academia and museums. To gain a better understanding, it's recommended to connect with people in the art history graduate community, possibly through online forums or social media groups.

It's surprising that many art history students seem to be heading into non-profit spaces. This might be due to the fact that the commercial art world is often driven by market forces rather than research.

The commercial art world is often seen as being more market-driven than research-focused. As someone who works in academia, this perception is not entirely inaccurate.

To make an informed decision about your graduate program, conduct targeted research on the art world. Look into the backgrounds of professionals working in galleries, their job paths, and the cost of graduate programs. Consider whether the potential earning potential will allow you to pay off your tuition debt. For example, some art gallery owners I know were from wealthy families, but this might not be the case for everyone.

You may also want to explore other institutions, such as Pratt Institute, which offers a Master's degree in Arts & Cultural Management.
