I'm an electrician who's used to separate checks in Canada, but in NYC, it's common for one person to pay and then others Venmo them a split. This often ends up with me paying more since I don't order as much or drink.

In New York City, many restaurants will do separate checks without issue if you ask beforehand. However, if you don't request this, they usually default to one check for convenience. When large groups go bar hopping, it can get chaotic, and people often end up Venmoing an uneven split. I've seen tabs become significantly lopsided when some group members are ordering multiple rounds and others are nursing a single drink.

To avoid the hassle, simply tell your companions you don't want to drink and ask for a separate check. Since drinks can be expensive, people are usually understanding. Alternatively, you can put your card down, take a photo of the receipt, and ask others to Venmo you.

In my cultural background, it's customary for the group to split the bill evenly, but this isn't always the case. Sometimes, we argue over who should pay the entire bill.
