Miami’s Innovation Model Gets National Stage with $3M Knight Foundation Investment
Miami's homegrown innovation model for government is expanding nationwide with a $3 million investment from the Knight Foundation. As a parent company of Miami-Dade County's pioneering public innovation model, MDIA is set to take its approach to government innovation to a broader audience, turning a local experiment into a national platform.

Expansion of the Model
Launched in 2023, the Miami-Dade Innovation Authority (MDIA) developed the Public Innovation Challenge, a framework that helps local governments identify operational challenges, test solutions from startups, and create pathways for procurement. This model has been applied across eight public challenges in Miami-Dade, addressing issues ranging from airport passenger experiences to urban mobility. The initiative focuses on services that directly affect residents' everyday interactions with government, including transportation, housing, and emergency management.
The funding marks a significant milestone for Miami's growing technology ecosystem, as the MDIA approach has dramatically reduced the time required to launch pilot projects. Traditional 18- to 24-month processes are now shortened to as little as seven months. The open-challenge model has also generated substantially higher participation from innovators, attracting an average of more than 70 applications per challenge compared with the 5 to 15 proposals typically received through a standard government request-for-proposals process.
Impact on Miami Residents
As the MDIA model expands, it means more opportunities for local startups and tech-enabled small businesses to collaborate with government. Residents can expect to see improvements in service delivery, reduced wait times, and accelerated permitting processes. The initiative is focused on services that directly impact everyday interactions with government, including transportation, housing, and emergency management.
Mayor Daniella Levine Cava of Miami-Dade County is excited about the potential of the model, stating that it will open doors for structured collaboration between local government and entrepreneurs.
