Community Heroes Restore La Paz Mangroves: A Fifteen-Year Success Story
In the heart of Baja California Sur, a dedicated group of twelve women known as Guardianas del Conchalito has been transforming a degraded mangrove estuary into a thriving ecological haven for over a decade. Their journey began in 2011 when they faced environmental challenges such as illegal fishing and littered wetlands. Today, they have successfully restored the area, turning it into a model of grassroots conservation.

The Guardianas started by securing the area and removing trash. They then began active restoration efforts, planting mangroves, monitoring water quality, and managing oyster beds. Their hard work has paid off; the estuary is now a vital nursery for commercial species and a critical habitat for migratory birds and marine life. The group has also opened a community nursery to support their restoration projects.
On August 14, 2026, the Governor of Baja California Sur, Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío, recognized the Guardianas' efforts and committed state support for their conservation activities. This recognition gives the women the tools and confidence to expand their work in the community and surrounding ecosystems.
