I've been trying to get the lay of the land and figure out how to get around Koh Phangan since my arrival in 2024. The island's car-free old town and limited public transportation options can make it challenging to get from point A to point B. However, with some planning and research, you can navigate Koh Phangan like a pro.

Navigating Koh Phangan: A Guide to Getting Around the Island

Getting to Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan has no airport or railway station, making Da Nang the primary gateway. The journey from Da Nang takes around 40-60 minutes by bus or 45-60 minutes by road, depending on traffic conditions.

From Hue, the journey takes around 3-4 hours by bus, while flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City take around 3.5-18 hours, depending on the route and layovers.

Getting Around the Island

Once you arrive on the island, the best way to get around is by bicycle or on foot. The island's roads are generally flat and easy to navigate, making it a great way to explore the island's scenic coastline and countryside.

The island's old town is car-free, with narrow streets and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure. This makes it easy to walk or cycle around the town, taking in the island's rich history and culture.

Transportation Options

There are several transportation options available on the island, including buses, taxis, and ride-hailing apps. However, these services can be limited, especially outside of peak season.

It's recommended to book your transportation in advance, especially during peak season, to ensure availability.
