I'm planning some renovations in my 1992 house, including removing the popcorn ceiling, old lino flooring, and getting into the drywall.

Asbestos in a 1992 build is highly unlikely. If you want to ease your mind, you can consider hiring a company, but it's not strictly necessary.

A quick search will provide the information you need. Building materials after 1985 are generally safe, and by the 1990s, asbestos was mainly used in brake pads and industrial fireproofing materials. The primary risk associated with asbestos is occupational, not residential.

You're not yet at the age where mesothelioma becomes a concern. That's the unfortunate reality of asbestos exposure.

Testing materials yourself is not a difficult process; you can collect samples and send them to a lab for analysis.

Given the age of the property in Calgary, it's probable that the plumbing is PolyB.

During my 1980s home renovation, I collected duplicate samples of popcorn ceiling, drywall joint compound, and vinyl flooring with paper backing from various locations. I stored them in labeled ziplock bags and sent them to a local lab for analysis. The cost was approximately $50 per sample, or they offered a multi-sample 'renovation' package at a lower price. The lab I used, located on 17th Avenue SW in Calgary, provided excellent advice and the testing process took only a few days. Interestingly, only the paper backing of the flooring tested positive for asbestos.
