Puerto Vallarta Celebrates 216 Years of Independence with a Night of Festivities

It's that time of year again when Puerto Vallarta, along with the rest of Mexico, gets ready to celebrate 216 years of independence. As an expat and digital nomad who’s been raising a family here since 2020, I’ve seen the city transform from a sleepy fishing village into a lively hub of international celebration.

The main event is the El Grito, a tradition where the president rings the bell at midnight and calls on the people to shout '¡Viva México!' But in Puerto Vallarta, they’ve got their own spin on it. Instead of just one big shout, they’ve got a whole night of festivities, fireworks, and live music. It's a great chance to see the city come alive, and it’s always a bit of a madhouse at the local park, El Malecón, where the fun starts at sundown.

One of the things that always amuses me is the sheer volume of people who show up with their best Mexican trajes, or traditional clothes. There’s something about the way they light up the city with their colorful outfits and lively dancing that makes the whole event feel like a big, friendly party. And who can blame them? It’s a proud tradition, and it’s hard not to get caught up in the spirit of it all.
