U turn at a 4 way stop - legal or illegal?

I thought U turns were only illegal at traffic lights, but the police officer said it's also illegal at 4 way stops. I've seen many people do U turns at this same intersection, and I have a clean driving record. Should I fight the ticket or just pay it?

The assumption that just because others do it, it's right or legal, is misguided. According to official guidelines, U turns are only permitted at intersections with traffic control devices if the device explicitly allows them.

At the Banff Trail and 16th Avenue intersection, a sign clearly indicates that U turns are allowed, making it a notable exception to the general rule.

You answered your own question with the Alberta traffic laws, which say U turns are only allowed at intersections controlled by a traffic light, unless specifically permitted by a traffic control device.

OP, I just looked up the area where you got ticketed and it says there's a no U-turn sign on Google Maps.
