How do Chicago street parking signs work?

How do Chicago street parking signs work?
交通 7 answers • Rocio Ibarra
I'm driving around the MCA in Chicago and noticed a street block has signs indicating no parking 12a - 6a. The signage is clear, but nobody parks there. A bus driver yelled at me for parking there, claiming it's a bus stop, but the bus stop is actually in front of where the parking is. What's going on with this parking spot?

I think the signs indicate no parking anytime, not just 12a - 6a. The line between the no parking and the times is the same as other signs I've seen in Chicago.

I often assume signs with times are referring to hours outside of those times. For instance, if a sign says no parking from 5pm to 9pm, I think it's reasonable to park there after 5pm, as long as I'm not causing any obstruction.

It seems people often struggle to understand the meaning behind these signs.

I agree that signs like this are fair game outside of the specified hours, as long as there are no other restrictions in place.

Meanwhile, signs in the West Loop say stuff like no parking 6AM - 2AM.

The crossed-out P on some signs has always led me to believe it's a warning about when not to park, rather than a complete prohibition. It's possible I'm misinterpreting the sign, though.

I'm now uncertain about how to read this type of sign, as I previously thought it meant no parking, stopping, or standing from 12pm to 6pm, but otherwise it was okay to park.
