Playa del Carmen Celebrates Independence with Big Turnout
On a night filled with tradition, patriotism, and family, Estefanía Mercado, the mayor of Playa del Carmen, led the CCXVI anniversary of the Grito de Independencia with a rousing ceremony attended by over 35,000 people. The event featured performances by Ximena Sariñana and Sin Bandera, who got the crowd singing and dancing in the Plaza 28 de Julio. As the mayor vitoreó the heroes of Mexican independence, the crowd responded enthusiastically, making it a memorable night for all present.
The large crowd reflects the enduring appeal of this celebration for expats and digital nomads living in Playa del Carmen, who can't help but feel a part of the rich cultural heritage of the city.
Five years ago, I drove my entire life from Mexico City to Cancun in a packed Nissan. The plan was to stay six months. The Caribbean had other plans. Now I run an e-commerce business from a hammock (sometimes literally) and spend too much time arguing about which taqueria is the best.
