Celebrating 176 Years of Noj Kaj Santa Cruz Xbaalam Naj: A Cultural Event in Cancún
On October 15, 2026, the Colectivo Cultural de Felipe Carrillo Puerto will commemorate 176 years since the founding of the ancient city of Noj Kaj Santa Cruz Xbaalam Naj, now known as Felipe Carrillo Puerto. The event, called 'Ofrenda de luz', will take place at the cenote of the Santuario de la Cruz Parlante, honoring the cultural resistance of the Maya people.

Manuel Chan Uicab, a representative of the colectivo, explains that the 15th of October 1850 marked the moment when the First Manifiesto of the Holy Cross was read, reviving hope and guidance for the Maya people during the War of Castes. The event will include the lighting of candles, readings from the First Holy Manifesto, traditional Maya music and dance, and a circle of the word for reflection on current cultural resistance.
This celebration is more than just a historical commemoration; it's a reminder of the ongoing cultural and social resilience of the Maya community in Cancún. For expats and digital nomads, this event offers a unique insight into the local culture and traditions, making it worth your time to attend or at least learn about it.
