Exploring Calgary’s Unique Surroundings: From Trekking Enthusiasts to Dinosaur Hunters
After years of saying it was temporary, I’ve found myself firmly rooted in Calgary, where a diverse array of unique towns and attractions awaits just a short drive from the city center. These places offer something different from the usual Alberta road trip, making them a perfect weekend getaway or a spontaneous day trip.

Vulcan: For Star Trek fans, Vulcan is a must-visit. This town has embraced its sci-fi connection, featuring a replica starship, a statue of Spock, and other space-themed attractions. It's about an hour and a half from Calgary, making it a convenient day trip option.
Drumheller: Known for its dinosaur attractions, Drumheller is a geological wonderland. The Royal Tyrrell Museum, the hoodoos, and the World’s Largest Dinosaur make it a fascinating destination. It’s a short drive from Calgary, offering a mix of history and natural beauty.
Nanton: Home to the Bomber Command Museum of Canada, Nanton has a unique claim to fame. Visitors can explore historic aircraft and see one of only 17 planes left in the world. This small town, located about an hour south of Calgary, offers a mix of historical significance and small-town charm.
Crowsnest Pass: A mountain getaway with a rich history, Crowsnest Pass is where the Frank Slide, a massive rockslide in 1903, occurred. The Frank Slide Interpretive Centre offers insights into this geological event and the landscape it left behind. It’s about an hour’s drive from Calgary and perfect for those seeking a mix of adventure and education.
Diamond Valley: Just under an hour from Calgary, Diamond Valley combines local shops, small-town charm, and stunning foothills scenery. It’s a unique spot that doesn’t require a long drive to experience.
