Calgary’s New Veterans Walkway: An Interactive Way to Honor Local Heroes
New to the city, or a long-time expat? Calgary is adding a unique touch to its Memorial Drive with the Veterans Walkway, a 5-kilometer stretch that aims to honor local veterans and educate the community about their sacrifices.

According to Carolyn Patton, the chair of the Veterans Walkway project, the initiative has been in the works for two years. The walkway will feature 31 bronze medallions embedded in the ground, connecting visitors to stories through a free companion app. The app will be available in English, French, Punjabi, and Mandarin, making the stories accessible to a wider audience.
“We chose the stories by bringing together a group of well-informed people, from military historians to curators at the Military Museum, all representing the Army, Navy, and Air Force,” Patton explained. This project is not only a physical addition to the city but also a digital one, enhancing the accessibility and reach of these stories.
The walkway's opening ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, October 17, at 2 p.m. at the Calgary Soldiers’ Memorial. The project is a lasting contribution to the city, supported by community involvement, and will remain open year-round.
For expats and digital nomads, this is a great opportunity to engage with the local community and learn more about Calgary’s rich history. The Veterans Walkway offers a practical way to explore and appreciate the city's military heritage, making it a must-visit for anyone interested in the area's past and present.
