Sewage Spill at Hartsfield-Jackson Raises Concerns for Atlanta Residents
Atlanta residents are growing increasingly concerned about the impact of a recent sewage spill at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on their health and the environment.

An estimated 33,000 gallons of sewage spilled at the airport on Wednesday, entering a wooded area before reaching Sullivan Creek, according to airport officials.
People living downstream of the creek said they were not notified about the spill, leaving many feeling frustrated and worried about the potential consequences.
"I’m appalled," said Caretta Carrington. "I can’t believe that they have not told us about this. This is crazy. This affects everybody, including my children and my grandchildren."
Henry Jackson, director of outreach and development with Flint Riverkeeper, found a strong odor, a grayish sheen on the water, and between 250 and 300 dead fish when he arrived at the creek.
"We need the city of Atlanta and the airport to get serious about infrastructure upgrades to prevent these spills from happening," Jackson said.
Jackson noted that this is not the first spill or pollution incident linked to the airport this year, citing numerous jet fuel spills and traces of propylene glycol found downstream.
In July, Atlanta News First reported on Flint Riverkeeper’s lawsuit against the airport over alleged airport-related pollution.
Residents are calling for greater transparency and action from the airport and city officials to address the issue.
"This affects everybody, including my children and my grandchildren," said Carrington. "We need to know what’s going on and what’s being done to fix it."

Residents are advised to take precautions when near the creek, such as avoiding contact with the water and washing hands thoroughly after exposure.
Flint Riverkeeper is also offering guidance on how to report any further pollution incidents.
"If you see something, say something," said Jackson.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the situation and to contact Flint Riverkeeper for updates and guidance.
"We will do everything in our power to ensure that the creek and surrounding areas are protected and safe for everyone," said Jackson.
Flint Riverkeeper is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the Flint River and its watershed.
The organization has been working to raise awareness about the impact of pollution on the environment and public health.
"We will continue to fight for the rights of the people and the environment to a safe and healthy environment," said Jackson.
