Cobb County Schools Removes ‘The Bluest Eye’ from District Shelves: A Parent’s Perspective

When Nathan Harper, a father of two, moved to Atlanta in 2016, he envisioned a place where his children could explore literature rich in cultural and historical significance. However, recent news from the Cobb County School District threatens to undermine this vision. The district has removed Toni Morrison’s “The Bluest Eye” from its shelves, a decision that resonates deeply with Harper and many other parents.

The superintendent, Chris Ragsdale, justified the move by citing graphic depictions of child rape, which violate the district’s standards for students in grades 6-12. Harper, who has been following the situation closely, notes the irony in the district’s decision. “It’s like they’re saying, ‘We’ll take the book, but we’ll keep the rape scenes,’” Harper laments.

Harper’s concern extends beyond just the book. He worries about the broader implications for his children’s education. “This isn’t just about one book; it’s about how we teach our kids to navigate the world and understand complex issues,” he explains.

Parent Heather Tolley-Bauer echoes these sentiments. She believes that the decision to ban the book and make an excerpt available online is misguided. “This explicit material that they were worried about a kid stumbling across in a library-now it’s being thrust upon all of our kids,” she argues.

Harper emphasizes the importance of parental involvement in determining what their children read. “Parents should be the ones making these decisions, not a school district. I want my kids to think critically and ask questions, not have the answers dictated to them,” he adds.
