As an American yoga teacher and digital nomad living in Tulum since 2023, I've seen firsthand the changes and challenges this beautiful town faces. The latest government report has some interesting numbers that might surprise you-let's dive into what it means for those of us who call Tulum home.

Tulum's Safety and Economy: A Closer Look at the Latest Government Report

83% Fewer Homicides

The report claims a significant drop in homicides, down 83% compared to 2024 and early 2025. This is a substantial improvement and a positive sign for the community's safety. Mayor Diego Castañón emphasized the transparency and the ongoing efforts to improve Tulum's future. He mentioned that the municipality added 200 public security cameras and 1,287 private ones connected to the C2 command center, along with 15 patrol vehicles. These measures are part of a broader strategy to enhance public safety.

Hotel Occupancy Drops

While the homicide rate is down, the hotel occupancy numbers are a bit concerning. The report states that hotel occupancy in Tulum dropped to 66.2% in the first half of 2026, a 8.1-point decrease. This could be due to various factors, including the strong dollar, global economic conditions, or simply the natural fluctuation of tourism trends. For expats and digital nomads, this might mean a change in the vibe of the town, with fewer tourists around.

New Developments and Housing

The report also noted that zero new housing projects have been registered in Tulum this year through August. Housing prices, however, have fallen by 10 to 12 percent, ranging from 1,200 to 9,000 dollars. This could be a good opportunity for those looking to buy or rent, but it's worth considering the overall market conditions and local real estate trends.
