Local Leaders Aim to Revitalize Maricao State Forest Trails

The Maricao State Forest is one of Puerto Rico's most visited ecological centers, home to 1,164 plant species and a thriving Puerto Rican parrot population. Recently, local and state leaders have gathered to discuss plans to rehabilitate the forest's trails, which were damaged by hurricanes Irma, María, and Fiona. This initiative aims to enhance the hiking experience and preserve the area's natural beauty for both locals and tourists.

Representative Omayra Martínez, alongside Maricao's mayor, Wilfredo 'Juny' Ruiz, and the subsecretary of the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources, Nelson Cruz, have initiated discussions to collaborate on the trail maintenance. The Department of Natural and Environmental Resources has secured $14,041,406.10 in federal funds through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to rehabilitate several trails, including Guana, Alto, Gambeta, Descanso, and Zoilo.

These efforts not only improve the visitor experience but also protect the endangered Puerto Rican parrot, now better safeguarded by enhanced monitoring. The rehabilitation will provide safer and more accessible paths for those wishing to explore this stunning natural area.
