Miami’s Maker Cities Initiative Empowers STEAM Learners Through Hands-On Public Art Projects
Bike rental owner in Miami, Gudrun V, shares insights on a new opportunity for expats and digital nomads in the city. The Maker Cities program at Moonlighter FabLab is offering a unique six-month course, funded by a $880,000 NSF grant, inviting 20 adult participants to design and build a public art installation on Lincoln Road, Miami Beach. Led by Tom Pupo and Daisy Nodal, both with architecture backgrounds, the program aims to bridge the gap between non-STEM and STEM skills.

The course covers everything from design thinking and entrepreneurship to advanced manufacturing techniques like 3D printing and CNC machining. Participants will not only learn technical skills but also how to collaborate and innovate in a community-based project. Upon completion, they will receive certifications and a stipend to support their work. Last August, the first cohort completed a series of 'Deco Portals,' paying homage to the architect Morris Lapidus and the MiMo style of Miami. This initiative is not just about art; it's about empowering individuals to explore and apply STEM skills in creative ways.
For those interested in joining the next cohort, now is the time to sign up. This program offers a practical way to engage with Miami's STEAM community and contribute to the city's unique art scene. If you're eager to build something tangible and impactful, this could be the perfect opportunity for you.
