Why do Mexicans prioritize cleaning?

I'm a curious expat who's lived in Mexico City for 8 years, trying to understand the local culture and customs. I've noticed that frequent cleaning, especially with strong-smelling products like Cloro and Fabuloso, is a common practice here, but I'm not sure why it's so prioritized. I'm looking for insights from others who may have thought about this too.

In Mexico City, there's a lot of dust and soot that comes in through the windows just by opening them a little bit. And since almost no one takes off their shoes when they enter a house, if you don't sweep the floors, you can feel the dirt on your feet. This is why people here clean the floors so much.

It's very easy for your house to fill up with bugs: cockroaches, ants, flies, scorpions, and even rats. They come out of the drains. They stick to your clothes and bags. A little bit of food that you didn't clean up is an invitation, and getting rid of it is complicated. These fragrances help keep those bugs away. Cockroaches hate the purple Fabuloso.

It's impressive to me how people are entirely in agreement with the smell and even encourage it. You've said it yourself, you're not used to it, but if you grew up with it, you barely even notice the smell.

You have the proof right there, leave the floors for two or three days without cleaning and then sweep them to see how much dust has accumulated (even if nothing seems to have been spilled). In Mexico, it's not common to take off your shoes when you enter a house, so you spread dirt and dust from the outside into your home, and those who like to walk barefoot at home will appreciate a clean floor.

We clean a lot in Mexico City because the streets are full of trash, excrement, and decomposing organic matter, and the street soil is very dirty. You bring that dirt into your home on the soles of your shoes, and the best way to clean it is with chlorine, pine, and Fabuloso. We're aware that dirt and bacteria can cause diseases and it's unappealing.
