What trade programs are available for high schoolers in Calgary?

I'm a parent in Calgary setting up a home with my partner. We're considering the trades for our child, but want to know if there are any programs that let them try out a trade before committing to an apprenticeship.

Look into the RAP program, it's a great way to get a feel for the trades and see if it's a good fit for your child.

There is the RAP program, but personally I think a summer job in the trade your child is interested in would be even better. It's one thing to learn about it in a classroom, but another thing entirely to see the day-to-day reality of it.

A summer job in a trade would give your child a more realistic view of the work involved. Calgary's electrical trade is oversaturated, so considering a job in fire alarm or sprinkler fitting might be a good option.

I think it's worth having your child talk to someone who's already in the trade to get a sense of what it's really like. Any job is going to feel different in the first year compared to the 20th year.

That's a great idea, having your child talk to people in the trade can give them a lot of insight into whether it's the right fit for them. They might even get some advice on how to get started.

One thing to consider is that not everyone can be a good tradesman, it's not just something anyone can achieve. If your child doesn't enjoy it, they can always switch to a different trade or go back to school.
