HISD Staff Firings - Did TEFA Cause This?

I've been noticing a lot of changes in Houston's public schools lately, and I'm trying to understand what's going on. I heard that some HISD staff were let go due to low student enrollment numbers.

The vouchers seem to be a contributing factor, but another issue is the dismantling of the public transportation system for kids to get to school. Some students now have bus stops that are over a 2-mile walk from their home, resulting in a 6-mile round trip on foot.

HISD had 3,859 kids qualify for TEFA, which is a relatively small percentage of the district's 168,000 students. Given this, it's possible that TEFA had some impact, but the 10,000 drop in enrollment is more likely due to other factors.

According to the latest numbers, HISD has around 156,000 active enrollments, not 168,000. Additionally, around 10,000 of these students are Texas connections kids, which affects the overall enrollment numbers.

To clarify, the enrollment numbers have dropped from around 168,000 to 156,000, a decrease of around 10,000 students. While TEFA may have played a role, it's unlikely to be the sole explanation for this decline.

Another factor that could be contributing to the decline is the decrease in migrant children enrolling in the district.

I think a more plausible explanation for the enrollment decline is a combination of factors, including a shift from TEFA, demographic changes, and some students trying to avoid immigration issues. This could account for around 10,000 students.

The takeover has led to a significant loss of qualified teachers, with a turnover rate of over 150%. Many parents are concerned about their children being in classrooms with unqualified teachers, which is a major issue.

While vouchers may be adding pressure, the bigger story is the longer-term enrollment decline that has accelerated since the takeover. This decline is now forcing the district to make staffing adjustments.
