How long are people waiting to get a dental cleaning appointment in Halifax?

I had to reschedule an appointment recently and the soonest my dentist could re-book me is June. I've heard it's due to a shortage of hygienists in Nova Scotia, but that kind of wait seems pretty extreme.

My dental hygienist has a long-standing client list, and she often books up several months in advance. To secure my next few appointments, I book ahead. The increased demand for dental care due to federal coverage has reduced the flexibility to make last-minute appointment changes. Interestingly, hygienists are often only paid if they see patients, which discourages them from leaving gaps in their schedule for flexibility, as this might result in not getting paid.

Some friends of mine have opened their own dental hygiene clinics, moving away from traditional dental offices. I'm not sure if this is a contributing factor, but if you're looking for a faster option, you might want to consider these clinics, which often have more direct access to patients.

The claim of a hygiene shortage seems suspicious, and I believe it's actually a retention issue. A nationwide study confirmed this. Dental offices are notorious for treating their staff poorly, which can lead to high turnover rates. A long wait time can be a red flag. Some dental hygiene-only clinics and offices with shorter wait times offer better care, as their hygienists are not overworked or overbooked.
