I'm from Maine and used to hiking hard stuff, so a challenging hike with a view is always worth it. I'll have a car but would prefer to stay in within an hour of the city because I am there for a conference. I'll be staying downtown for 2 days and then in Scottsdale, for the rest of the week.

Lost Dog Wash Trailhead and do the Sunrise trail. I've done this hike before and it's a great way to get some exercise and enjoy the views before the sun gets too hot.

If you're looking for a challenging hike with great views, Flat Iron is an excellent choice. However, keep in mind that it's a bit farther from downtown than some of the other options, requiring a slightly longer drive.

Two South Mountain trails I highly recommend are the Pima Canyon trailhead and the Holbert trail. The former can be reached in 15-20 minutes from downtown, and the latter offers a steady climb to the panoramic vista at Dobbins Lookout, which can be reached in about an hour.

The Holbert Trail is a beautiful and moderately challenging hike that culminates in the stunning panoramic view from Dobbins Lookout. The steady climb makes it a great option for those looking for a workout.

The Phoenix Mountain Preserve System offers several hiking options, including a long section of the National Trail that runs for 13 miles through South Mountain Park. You can access it from various trailheads, such as the one near Thompson Peak in the Scottsdale McDowell Sonoran Preserve.
