I've been trying to manage my debt for a while, but I'm not sure where to turn. I have approximately $25,000 in different debts, including personal loans, a car loan, and other obligations. Some of my debts are up to date, while others are in arrears, which has affected my credit score. I want to find a way to consolidate my debt, but I'm not sure if I qualify or what options are available to me.

You should calculate how much your monthly payment would be for a $25,000 loan. With a 10% interest rate over 7 years, you'd pay around $400 to $500 per month. It's not impossible, but you also need to consider that you'll be paying this amount for a long time. One option is to focus on paying off your smallest debts first, then move on to the larger ones. You could also ask some friends or acquaintances for a small amount, say $50 or $100, to put towards a debt that's really hurting you with interest.

If you have credit cards among your debts, you can ask the bank to apply Ley 81 and turn them into personal loans. When looking at personal loans, check the interest rates and choose the one with the lowest rate. Don't consolidate with that one. The car loan is a depreciating asset, so if you can pay it off separately, it's better to do so because you can cancel it before the $25,000 mark. You can go to your preferred bank and present your case. They'll evaluate your creditworthiness for the $25,000 and consider your past financial history.

Be careful with debt consolidations, the solution might be worse than the problem. I had a bad experience with a poorly planned consolidation. If your credit score is bad, a consolidation might not be the best option. Pay off your smaller debts first, that will help improve your credit score. When you're out of those, focus on the larger debts. Remember that most loans are discounted directly, so they'll take it from your paycheck. If you still think you need a consolidation, avoid financial institutions, they're like vultures. Banks are a bit more friendly, but still be cautious.

If you're a public employee with over 10 years of service, you might be eligible for a loan like this. If you work in the private sector, you'll need guarantors or collateral for $25,000.

In my case, I had to get my payments back on track to avoid losing my apartment. The credit cards just expired. It all depends on which debts you have, but the most damaging ones are usually from financial institutions. Avoid getting a loan from a financial institution at all costs.
