Cancún Readies Nighttime Operations to Safeguard Blue Crabs
As autumn approaches, the coastal city of Cancún is preparing for a significant event: the protection of blue crabs during their annual mating journey. Starting from October 25th, the Dirección General de Ecología of Benito Juárez will conduct nightly patrols to ensure the crabs can safely cross the city's roads and reach the ocean. This initiative aims to reduce the risk of crabs being hit by vehicles, a common threat during their migration.

The blue crab, known as Callinectes sapidus in Latin, embarks on this journey during the full moon, when females leave their mangrove habitats to lay eggs. These crustaceans must navigate through urban areas, which can be perilous. The first operation in September successfully rescued over 190 crabs, although this number was lower than previous years due to drier conditions.
Residents and visitors are urged to drive cautiously during these nights, particularly near the mangroves. The city authorities hope to mitigate the risk through careful coordination and public awareness.
